It’s easy to get caught up in the business of the day-to-day. It’s easy to feel... well, busy. However, on a national holiday such as Veterans Day, it’s the perfect time to pause. Men and women have been courageously serving our country for decades. If you have a service member in your family or close friend circle, today may be especially tender for you. Politics aside, most people just want their friends and families to be safe and happy.
So, how can we give back to a community that has faced so many challenges? How can we help? There are many ways to make a difference and we have curated ideas to show our thanks.
1. Say ‘Thank You’
It’s a simple gesture, but one that goes a long way. Making others feel appreciated and valued is one of the greatest gifts you can give.
2. Hire a Veteran
As a community, Veterans have an unfortunately high rate of unemployment. The Work Opportunity Tax Credit, which provided up to $9,600 for hiring veterans, has expired and the savings for employers is no longer there. If you are able, hireveterans.com is a job board resource.
3. Send a letter
A Million Thanks walks you through the process to send a letter to active and retired military members. Share your thoughts and thanks to someone who may need an uplifting note.
You can do so many small things that will make others feel special and noticed. Other ideas are: visiting a retirement home, inviting a veteran to Thanksgiving dinner, making a donation, or sending a care package.
What are you doing to give thanks today? Do you have any Veterans Day traditions?
