Personal Finance Blind Spots

Your family is, in many ways, a reflection of you. That means you get credit for all of the wonderful things in your family, but also to take responsibility for the not so wonderful.  In our view, accepting this leadership concept of responsibility is the necessary first step for you to begin seeing your blind spots.

Ready to hold up the mirror?  Take a look around.  What is your family showing you?

Do most days feel organized and productive?  Are members of your family fully engaged? Do you spend time with charitable causes?  Do you pay bills on time and hold yourself accountable to your predetermined budget? Your family is a byproduct of your choices, habits, fears and strengths, especially those you are not aware of. This of course applies to life outside of family finance.

Your family is probably doing well in the areas that you enjoy and are sure of yourself.  That's fantastic! Now, let's think of the areas where you have more struggle.  By looking there you can begin to make a connection to the things you find hard.  Avoiding what you find hard keeps you from building the family culture you want.

Ask yourself:  What are the things I find hard to do, be or say?  Write them down.  Keep asking the question.  Spend the next week thinking about that question while you start noticing what you are avoiding.  Is it having a difficult conversation with you're spouse?  Paying attention to your monthly budget.  Maybe you're not great at being honest with your emotions. Or you have trouble accomplishing your savings goal.

There is a powerful process we use that guides people to discover the underlying feelings, beliefs, and sometimes superstitions that surround them. We call this the Planning for LIFE Experience™. From there we can pull values and patterns apart and find the origins.  The magic of this process is that the journey creates room for a new result to emerge.  There is an opportunity to move through things that are hard.  Moving past this provides you more clarity and with more clarity you have the confidence to approach your life, work and personal finances, effortlessly!

So, when you become aware of something you find difficult, financially or otherwise, write it down immediately.  This is the start of illuminating blind spots.  By identifying blind spots, you begin to spot patterns, behaviors and beliefs in you that are getting in the way of having a flourishing family.  By working from the inside out, you are closer to achieving a wonderful, loving family culture.  Avoiding what you find hard keeps you from building the family you want.

What successes have you had with your family? What struggles?
