Goals That Score and Those That Won't

blog-post-2.jpg

Here I am, a few weeks into 2013 and I’m already regretting one of my New Year’s goals. Despite all odds, I became seduced by the idea of getting in shape so I resolved to work out at the gym three times a week. The payoff? A core meltdown. My abs are killing me. What was I thinking? I’m a casual weekend warrior, not an Iron Woman in the making.

The problem with that goal is that I keep putting it back on the top of my list because I never manage to get it done. Know what I mean? I keep health clubs in business because I keep signing up. I go a few times and by February, my life as a gym rat is over.

Finally, I get it. I’ve got the wrong goal. And, why do we usually think we’re stuck with them for 12 months. I’ve done quite a bit of checking--nowhere is it written that you can’t change your New Year’s goals.  My goal has never been about clocking in at the gym, it’s about better health and wellness. Okay, really, it’s about living long enough to hear my kids say, “You were right, Mom.” Just once.

What I want is a long, vibrant life with my family. That’s really what this workout business is about. So, I called a family meeting and told my two kids that what I really want to accomplish this year is to spend high quality time with them, doing active, fun things that will keep us in each other’s lives for years and years.

Once they realized that was code for doing a lot more snowboarding, skiing, maybe hiking a fourteener this summer, going rafting and trying something new, they were completely psyched. My parental standing has soared. Better enjoy it while it lasts.

Next weekend after a day on the slopes together, I’ll remember precisely why I thought working out three times a week was a good idea… and also why I thought energetic activities with my kids was a better one.

What are you going to be up to this year? Tell us what good idea has grabbed you!
