Okay, the truth is I’m a romantic. Yes, complete with my love of chick flicks, the warm glow of candles, quiet dinners, Jim Brickman music…you get my drift.
So when Valentine’s Day approaches, I’m all in! I pull out my red sweater, send out the cards, buy the candy hearts and eat the chocolates, all in the celebration of LOVE.
Are you among the 62% of adults who say they celebrate Valentine’s Day?
This most romantic day of the year has accumulated much cultural hype. Did you know that 448 million dollars are spent on candy and 58 million pounds of chocolate are bought the week before February 14th? Men spend an average of $150 and women $74 on this day.
The top flower purchased is not the red rose, but a mixed bouquet, followed by red roses, then other roses. But most important, Americans spend 8.6 million dollars on sparkling wine, making it the bubbliest occasion after New Year’s, Christmas and Thanksgiving! Really?
So what’s the fuss? If you are among the 38% who don’t celebrate the Valentine hoopla, consider looking at the day as a way to share your love differently. Who are you grateful to have enjoyed some life experience with? How about a co-worker or a neighbor who is always there and reliable? Tell them specifically why you appreciate them in your life. Make someone else’s day!
How will you be spending the day? For me, I am so grateful to my family. But for one night, I’m enjoying a private dinner at home with my sweetie in front of the fireplace, surrounded by candles, music and lots of chocolate! LOVELY!
